Career Tips From Our Customer Service Executive

September 7, 2019by NowNow0

I’m Ronke, a customer service personnel with over twelve years of experience; two years as a Compensation and Benefits Officer in Human Resources and over nine years as a Customer Service Executive. I’ve had the opportunity to work with different bosses and world-class companies including Sterling Bank and MTN Nigeria. My experiences have shaped me into the woman I have become, and I can boldly say I enjoy being a customer service professional more than any other job. I love customer service because:

1. It gives me the opportunity to render assistance professionally or on personal ground.

2. It really gives me joy seeing smiles of satisfaction on people’s faces.

3. The way I feel about my job is as if in my absence, no one else would be able to resolve the queries as I would.

4. It gives me an avenue to meet new people with different opinions and views.

5. I feel fulfilled every time I replay the day’s activities in my head and realise, I was able to make my customers laugh as a result of the service I rendered to them. It gives me great joy to know that I was able to change their negative opinion or view of my employee or organisation.

Customer service starts from our homes; how do you relate with people around you? Do you have to know people before you are polite to them? Do you have to like people before you assist or relate with them? Customer service encompasses our daily lives and routines; it is seen in how we relate to our neighbours and help in solving their problems. Then it expresses itself better in how we deal with our colleagues and customers.

Before I get too engrossed with customer service, let me share with you some helpful career tips from my experience and others I picked up along my career journey.

Work harder than everyone under you or above you. Nothing commands respect more than a good work ethic. While I was with MTN, I took every training quite seriously. I realised that about 80% of my colleagues would turn to me repeatedly for job-related questions as if I was their boss. I never got tired of answering them and I kept getting better on the job to the extent that even my immediate boss usually asks for my assistance.

“The best career or job is the one in which you’re using the skills you enjoy. But not every job needs to address all your passions. Use every job as an opportunity to learn something new and keep an open mind. You may at the end of the day realise you really enjoy something you never imagined would ever appeal to you.” — Miriam Salpeter, Founder of Keppie Careers.

“Don’t take yourself (or your career) too seriously. Plenty of brilliant people started out in jobs they hated or took paths that weren’t right at the beginning of their careers. Professional development is no longer linear, and trust that with hard work and a dedication to figuring out what you want to do with your life, you, too, will be OK!” — Kathryn Minshew, CEO of The Muse.

“Every person you meet is a potential door to a new opportunity — personally or professionally. Build good bridges even in that just-for-now job, because you never know how they’ll weave into the larger picture of your life” — Kristina Leonardi, Career Coach.

Choose a mentor because you really do need one. Your mentor could even be your boss. Remember you can have the worse job ever but if you have a good boss then you have all you need to keep you going at work and to shape your career.

Always remember this, the job you are just getting by with could give you enough experience to bring your career to the dreamland, so take it one day at a time. Never go late to work regardless of whether you’re being monitored or not. Never take undue advantage of your boss’s kindness or likeness towards you. Take the job as if the business belongs to you. Learn to work hard and work smart, do not overwork yourself to avoid getting sick often.
